2024 Preakness Stakes Handicapping
The second jewel of the US Triple Crown is up for grabs on Saturday afternoon with the running of the (G1) Preakness Stakes. With one scratch taking place earlier this week, eight runners are set to go to the Pimlico gate, and they’ll be running 1 3/16 miles on the dirt track.
Three horses are coming out of the Kentucky Derby, including winner Mystik Dan, who will try to take the next step toward the Triple Crown title. With heavy favourite Muth scratched earlier this week due to illness, the race is fairly wide open and should offer some good betting value.
It should be noted that showers are expected to start in the Baltimore area in the afternoon, and the track could be wet by the 7:01 pm post time.

2024 Preakness Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Mystik Dan Race Odds: 5-2
Mystik Dan made a first impression on the Triple Crown trail back in February when he and jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. took a rail skimming route to win the (G3) Southwest Stakes over a muddy Oaklawn Park track.
That worked so well, they tried it again in the Derby, and as everyone knows it paid off in the narrowest of nose victories in a three-horse photo finish.
Expect Hernandez to try to get on the rail again. Mystik Dan has enough tactical speed to get a good position early and should be making his move from mid-pack as they come off the final turn.
2024 Preakness Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Catching Freedom Race Odds: 6-1
The late-running Catching Freedom was as far back as 15th of 20 in the early part of the Derby, but like Mystik Dan he was able to get a spot on the rail and was eating up ground through the stretch. He eventually finished fourth, less than two lengths behind the winner.
While he’ll likely be near the back again early, here he will only have to contend with seven other horses, unlike the 20-horse traffic jam of the Derby.
Imagination Race Odds: 6-1
Making his first start outside of California, Imagination was last seen finishing second by just a neck in the (G1) Santa Anita Derby, behind a winner who went on to run seventh in the Kentucky Derby.
He has the advantage of early speed in a race that on paper doesn’t have too much other early speed, and he could very well find himself alone on the front end. He’s recently put in a couple of six-furlong works to prepare fro the stretch out in distance.
Tuscan Gold Race Odds: 8-1
The lightly raced Tuscan Gold will be making only his fourth lifetime start, but it’s interesting to note that trainer Chad Brown’s two previous Preakness winners were also just making their fourth start when they won.
He was the morning line favourite for last weekend’s (G2) Peter Pan Stakes at Aqueduct, but was scratched out of that race to go here instead. His speed figures have been improving nicely with each successive race and could very well move up again in his third start of the form cycle.

On recent form and back class, the top two listed here are the ones to beat and this very well could come down to a drag race in the stretch between Mystik Dan and Catching Freedom.
That being said, as mentioned above there is not a lot of early pace signed onto the race, and you can expect the times to be much slower than what we saw in the Derby. That does not set up well for closers. Granted, Mystik Dan doesn’t have to be far back early and should get the trip he wants. But at the same time he was all-out for a long way in the Derby stretch drive, and you have to wonder what that effort may have taken out of him.
To me it makes sense to price shop a bit, and I’m going to take Tuscan Gold for the win. Despite being entered in the Peter Pan, I think the trainer was targeting this race all along. Unless someone else goes crazy he should get a good stalking trip behind Imagination, and being well-rested and on a steady upward cycle, he could be sitting on a big effort.
