2024 Belmont Stakes Handicapping
While there is no Triple Crown bid on the line for the 2024 (G1) Belmont Stakes, the race will make history for the first time being run at Saratoga Race Course in upstate while New York City’s Belmont Park undergoes renovations.
Due to the fact the Saratoga dirt track configuration won’t allow for a two-turn 1 1/2 mile race – the traditional distance for the Belmont Stakes – the race will be shortened to 1 1/4 miles, the same distance as the Kentucky Derby.
The race is open to three-year-old horses and has drawn a field of 10 runners, including 2024 Derby winner Mystik Dan, and 2024 Preakness Stakes winner Seize the Grey.
The Belmont Stakes caps an excellent card of racing at Saratoga on Saturday that will feature eight other stakes races, five of those at the Grade 1 level.

2024 Belmont Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Sierra Leone Race Odds: 9-5
Although he didn’t win either of the first two Triple Crown races – he was second in the Derby and skipped the Preakness – Sierra Leone is still considered the cream of the three-year-old crop and is only two slight noses away from being undefeated in his five race career.
By now everyone knows what to expect from him. He’ll be very near the back of the pack early, and then will be coming with a powerful run down the stretch. There is a fair amount of speed signed on to the race, and so he should get a fast pace to close into.
2024 Belmont Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Mystik Dan Race Odds: 5-1
The Kentucky Derby hero Mystik Dan took the shortest path with a rail-skimming trip around the Churchill oval and then dug in in deep stretch to hold off a fast-closing Sierra Leone at the wire. He was inside most of the way again in the Preakness until tipping out in the stretch but could not catch the winner after another game effort.
He’ll be the only horse in the race to try all three legs of the TC, and so this will be his third start in five weeks. The concern might then be if all that hard running catches up to him here.
Seize The Grey Race Odds: 8-1
He didn’t earn enough qualifying points to get into the Kentucky Derby gate, but Seize The Grey was ready when he got his chance in the Preakness, going right to the lead and taking the field wire-to-wire.
That was his second victory in a row, as he had previously pressed the pace and then got up for a 1 1/4 length win in the (G2) Pat Day Mile at Churchill Downs. With several front-running types in this field, he may have to revert back to that stalking style again.
Dornoch Race Odds: 15-1
The hard-luck Dornoch had the misfortune of drawing the inside post in the 20-horse Derby, and it likely cost him at least a few placings as he was shuffled back early and had to check hard, losing momentum and then racing mid-pack throughout.
He has been putting in some very good works at Saratoga leading to this, and it’s perhaps worth noting that back in December he actually beat Sierra Leone after an epic stretch battle in the (G2) Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct.

Had Sierra Leone and Mystik Dan raced side-by-side throughout the Kentucky Derby, there’s little doubt the result would have been different. But they didn’t race side-by-side, and while Mystik Dan rode the rail, Sierra Leone had to make the wide sweeping move on the final turn that took him from eighth place to just missing at the wire.
I’m not usually big on these late-running horses, especially at low odds. But I think he’s clearly the best horse in the race, and with the smaller field and coming in fresh off a five-week break, I think he gets the job done.
I was actually kind of a fan of Dornoch back in the fall and considered him an early Derby contender. Since then he hasn’t set the world on fire – despite the Remsen win – and is flying a bit under the radar. On not much more than a hunch, this seems the time to bet him, and he’s my pick to round out the exacta.
