2024 Alabama Stakes Handicapping
The biggest race of the Saratoga meet for three-year-old fillies, the (G1) Alabama field has actually been bolstered by the absence of Thorpedo Anna, the best filly in the country.
With the connections of that superstar electing to try their luck against the boys in the (G1) Travers Stakes later this month, the Alabama suddenly becomes more wide open and has drawn a field of eight starters. They’ll race 1 1/4 miles on the Saratoga dirt track.

2024 Alabama Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Candied Race Odds: 7-5
One of three in the race for trainer Todd Pletcher, morning line favourite Candied was last seen finishing second by more than four lengths to Thorpedo Anna in the CCA Oaks at Saratoga and will perhaps benefit most from the absence of that one here.
She’s already a Grade 1 winner after taking the Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland last fall after breaking her maiden first out at Saratoga. She filled up the Alcibiades by running third, beaten just 3/4 of a length in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.
2024 Alabama Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Power Squeeze Race Odds: 9-2
The very consistent Power Squeeze had a stretch of four consecutive wins from last October to March of this year, before running into Thorpedo Anna in the (G1) Kentucky Oaks where she finished sixth over a sloppy track.
She was beaten again by that one next out in the (G1) Acorn Stakes at Saratoga, but comes into this off a win in the (G3) Delaware Oaks. For her career she has five wins in nine lifetime starts. It’s worth noting that her two biggest defeats came at 1 1/8 miles, now she’s asked to go 1/8th further.
Just Basking Race Odds: 5-1
An easy winner of the Iowa Oaks, Just Basking makes her graded-stakes debut in the Alabama, as well as her first start at Saratoga.
For her short career she has two wins and two runner-up finishes in five starts, and despite the fact this is by far the toughest field she has faced, she also does have the distinction of being the only filly in the field with a start- and win – at this 1 1/4 mile distance.
Miss Justify Race Odds: 6-1
A half-sister to 2023 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Just FYI from Triple Crown winning sire Justify, Miss Justify is another making her graded-stakes debut. She does have a lower-stakes win from her last start, and that was her second win in a row.
On the positive side, that win came over this Saratoga dirt track. The challenge for her might be distance, as this will be her first time in a race beyond one mile.

From a handicapping standpoint, this is an interesting race in that there is no pure speedball that can be expected to set the pace, and a whole bunch of fillies that like to stalk or come from a bit further back.
Add to that the fact all but one will be trying the 1 1/4 mile distance for the first time, and jockey tactics will be key.
While Candied is the logical choice on paper, I don’t think it’s as clear-cut as the ML odds would suggest, and at low odds it seems worthwhile to try and beat her. I like Miss Justify’s last-out win over the track, and she appears to be one that will improve with more distance. I’ll try to get some value and take her for the win.
