2024 Woodbine Mile Handicapping
A big late summer race card at Woodbine goes Saturday afternoon, with no less than five graded stakes on the card, with three of those offering the first place finisher a ‘Win and You’re In’ ticket to the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. This year’s BC will be run at Del Mar race track November 1st & 2nd.
The main event on the card is the (G1) Woodbine Mile, with the winner gaining automatic entry into the BC Mile. The race has drawn a solid field of eight runners , with a pair of formidable European invaders going to the gate.

2024 Woodbine Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Naval Power Race Odds: 1-1
The odds-on favourite in Naval Power has six wins from seven starts in the UK and the United Arab Emirates, and two races with two second place finishes in the US this past summer.
Both of those US starts came in Grade 1 races back in the spring. First up was the Maker’s Mark Mile at Keeneland where he was beaten just over two lengths on yielding turf. Last out he tried stretching out to 1 1/8 miles and actually made the lead in deep stretch before giving way late to lose by a head.
2024 Woodbine Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Filo de Arianna Race Odds: 5-2
The well-travelled Filo de Arianna was actually foaled in Brazil but has spent the past couple years racing in North America, including five previous starts at Woodbine.
Something of the horse-for-the-course, he’s a perfect 5-for-5 in those races, and also has three wins and a runner-up finish in five one-mile races. Last out he won the (G2) King Edward Stakes, which serves as the local Woodbine prep for this race.
Big Rock Race Odds: 6-1
Throughout the 2023 season, Big Rock was nothing short of a superstar in Europe, winning three races and finishing as the runner up in three others. He closed out the season with a dominating six-length win in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II at Ascot.
But since the calendar has turned to 2024, he’s been nothing short of ordinary, finishing out of the money and well-beaten in three races so far this year. He’ll try to turn things around here with his first North American start.
Playmea Tune Race Odds: 12-1
A bit of a wildcard in this field, Playmea Tune is a four year-old that only started racing this year and has only mde three lifetime starts.
From those he has two wins and a runner-up finish by a very close neck. He has shown a very quick turn of foot down the lane, and given that all his races have been at 6 1/2 furlongs, the added distance here might help. The big question is in how he’ll handle the surface, as all of his races have come on the all-weather Tapeta surface.

There’s no doubt that Naval Power looms large here, but I don’t think it’s to the point we should just concede him the race. For one thing, several of his early career wins came against somewhat questionable competition. And although he did well against better fields in his two US starts, those weren’t overly fast races
I think it’s wrth a shot to beat him, and for better value I’ll play Filo de Arianna for the win. His record on the track and at the distance really stands out, and he looks to be in top form coming off a win and lifetime best speed figure.
